Consider Broadening Your Horizons PDF Print E-mail
If you have recently completed your studies in Hotel Management, or another service-related field, or you have a minimum of 2 years experience in your chosen industry, then you can use this to your advantage by going overseas and earning dollars or pounds. The lure is strong and the opportunities plentiful. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of recently qualified men and women, in their late teens to early twenties who are broadening their horizons with a year or more of work-travel. Let’s take a look at the hospitality industry opportunities in general, and cruise liners in particular.

Hospitality
If you have experience, preferably with a qualification, then you should, with relative ease, gain employment in this industry. Jobs vary from chefs to porters, from receptionists to waiters. This industry can take you to numerous places internationally, such as the UK, Europe, the USA, and many other countries. Wherever there is a healthy tourism industry you are bound to find employment. You must be prepared for long hours, particularly during ‘tourist peaks’, and salaries vary from place to place and are not always the best (though this will normally be counteracted by free board and lodging, and access to facilities). You are far more likely to be granted a visa for the country to which you will travel if you have secured employment prior to your departure. For professionals, there are hospitality posts in top rated international hotels throughout the world. Many of these belong to major hotels chains, such as Hilton, Inter-Continental, Sheraton, Hyatt etc and offer the ability to move around within the organisation.
Your best bet for gaining employment in this field is to work through an agency which can assist you every step of the way.

Cruise Ships
This is a very popular form of working your way around the world as you get to visit the many ports where the ships dock. You save money because your accommodation, food and uniform are paid for. Your personal expenses are minimal, so when the ship docks your wages/ salary is yours to spend.
To start, you should decide which countries/ ports you would like to visit and then identify which cruise liners visit those you have selected. All of this information is easily found on the internet. Once you know what sort of job you are capable of doing, or what you are qualified to do, you have two options for application: you can either contact the cruise liner’s personnel department directly, or you can go through an agency.
Though the idea of sailing the seven seas might be appealing, this sort of employment is often arduous and the working hours can be very long, but the countries you will get to see will definitely be worth the effort.
